Ivana Chubbuck is internationally recognised for her 12-Step Chubbuck Technique —
a method based on psychology, behavioural science, and cultural anthropology.
Her work has helped shape award-winning performances across film and television such as Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Jake Gyllenhaal, Beyoncé and Jon Bernthal, and is taught internationally in major conservatories and studios.
This August, she brings her work to Sydney for a 4-day immersive masterclass at ATYP Theatre.
WHAT THIS IS
Over four days at ATYP Theatre, 32 actors will work on prepared scenes in a professional scene study masterclass environment.
The 12-Step Chubbuck Technique is applied to each actor and each scene in real time.
Participants perform scenes on stage and receive direct feedback from Ivana Chubbuck. All exercises are related to the actual scene work and are applied when relevant to the actor and the scene being explored.
Auditors observe the process in a full theatre setting and take part in selected group exercises.
WHAT MAKES THE TECHNIQUE DIFFERENT
The Chubbuck Technique teaches actors to use emotional pain, fears and insecurities as fuel —
to overcome obstacles and win their objective.
Rather than treating emotion as an end result, the work focuses on pursuing a clear objective and fighting for it. Actors learn how to connect their own life experiences to the character’s core need, transforming personal emotion into active behaviour.
